What is a fracture?
A fracture is a complete or incomplete break in the continuity of bone or cartilage. A fracture is accompanied by various degrees of injury to the surrounding soft tissues, including blood supply and by compromised function of the locomotor system.
Fractures may be classified on many bases and are useful in describing the fracture:
- Closed Fracture: the fracture does not communicate to the outside
- Open Fracture: the fracture communicates to the outside, may become contaminated or infected. Healing may be complicated and delayed
Clinical Signs
- Pain or localized tenderness
- Deformity of change in angulation
- Abnormal mobility
- Local swelling
- Loss of function
- Crepitus (grating sound)
Diagnosis
- Clinical Signs
- History
- Radiographs
- Physical Examination
Treatment
The goal of treatment is early ambulation and complete return to function. The treatment will be developed depending on the severity and location of the fracture
There are several ways to treat fractures (i.e. casting, surgery, etc.). A tailored treatment plan will be developed at the time of the appointment and all options will be discussed to create the best plan for you and your pet
